Research notes on Samuel Francis Du Pont, 1824-1865.

The collection consists of photocopies and transcripts of correspondence of Samuel Francis Du Pont, his wife Sophie Madeleine du Pont, and other prominent figures, selected from the collections of the Hagley Museum and Library, the Huntington Library, and other institutions. Many of the texts did not appear in the edited, published version. The collection also includes drafts of "appendices," "table of contents and chronology," "medical history," and a notebook, "The Blockade Strategy Board - Memoirs and Minutes of Meetings," June-Sept. 1861, copied from the original in the National Archives, Du Pont being a member of the Board, which sat at Washington.

Henry du Pont was born in 1812 at Eleutherian Mills near Wilmington, Delaware. He attended the Mount Airy Military School in Germantown, Pennsylvania, from 1823-1829 and then went to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating in 1833.
